Involving Youth on Youth Councils - content call
March 8, 2005 - 9:15am - 10:15am
As a follow-up to discussing ideas and strategies for youth engagement at the All Youth-One System Conference, New Ways to Work and YCi are hosting a content call on the topic of Involving Youth on Youth Councils. This call will feature a facilitated discussion in which participants are invited to share strategies and challenges related in engaging youth on decision-making bodies. In addition, we will discuss the suggestions made by youth at the conference regarding helping them get connected.

Materials: Notes from the Youth Council Orientation for Youth and the Youth Perspective Session at the All Youth-One System Conference are available for download online.
During the Youth Perspective Session and Closing Plenary participants explored three primary questions:
1. What's connected and working? (To prepare you for work and life)
2. What's disconnected/not working?
3. What do we (adults) need to do?

The primary ideas shared were captured in a PowerPoint show, which was presented during the closing plenary. See the online presentation.

Conference Call Guidelines - How it Works

Meeting Materials: Meeting materials are posted on the New Ways website several days before the call.   Participants download and read the materials to prepare for the call.

Joining the Call: Promptly at the posted time participants call (707) 824-8013. (The phone will ring until at least two people have called in.)

Please Note:   The New Ways conference line accommodates 30 callers only. Interest in some topics is very high, so not all callers may be able to connect. If you are unable to connect to the call, please email info@nww.org and New Ways will look into scheduling a second call on this topic.

Call Structure: A New Ways moderator hosts the call, and introduces one or a panel of content experts - practitioners who share promising practices from their community.   The panelists speak on the topic for about ten minutes each.   A question and answer and discussion forum follow, during which participants discuss the topic with panelists and one another.

Guidelines: If you have multiple people calling in from one office, please call in from one phone on speakerphone to maximize participation.   Place your speakerphone on mute so other participants are not distracted by background noise.

Do not place the line on hold to answer another call; instead, hang up and dial back in.   "Hold music" is disruptive to a conference call.

If you call in from a cell phone, please place it on mute.

If there is excessive noise due to poor reception or difficulty with noise due to the speakerphone, the moderator may ask you to not participate in the discussion or to drop off the call.
