Youth Council Institute (YCI) Meeting

WHEN:

1 pm October 18th through 1pm October 19th
WHERE:
In the greater Los Angeles area - exact location still to be determined.
[probably Ontario or Orange County]

WHO:

The Youth Council Chair or another key member of the Youth Council
AND a key staff person to the Youth Council. We would like to have 2 people
from each Workforce Investment Area in the State!

Staff will include myself, John Baker, Steve Trippe, Lois Ann Porter, Charlene Mouille, and invited staff from the Ca. State
Workforce Investment Board. If the timing is right, we will also invite newly appointed members of the State Youth
Council.

BACKGROUND

The California Workforce Investment Board selected New Ways to Work and the California Workforce Association to establish the Youth Council Institute (YCI). YCI will assist California's Youth Councils in becoming strategic and catalytic
forces in developing comprehensive youth systems at the local level throughout the state. The Institute will develop a Youth Council network and provide technical assistance and support to the state's 50 Youth Councils.

This is the first of a number of statewide events tailored for Youth Council members and staff and will be the foundational meeting for future events.

THIS EVENT:

At this meeting, we will train attendees on the use of new tools, provide training on how to do a Youth Council self-assessment , and conduct several sessions on best practices already in place throughout California. This meeting is designed to start the peer learning network of California's Youth Councils. The event will be highly interactive, with lots of opportunity to talk and network with peers.

COST:

This and other YCI events are paid for through the California State Workforce Investment Board grant to NWW/CWA. You will be responsible for hotel and travel costs. Meals (including dinner) and all materials will be provided.

ACTION REQUESTED:

Please forward this message to your Youth Council Chair and Youth Council staff. Please
encourage their participation. The California State Workforce Investment Board has a strong interest in ALL Youth Councils
attending this and future events.

We have cc'd the people whose e-mails you provided to EDD/State Board in one of their surveys and the people who attended our field review meetings on September 18th as well. If you have updated contact information, or have not yet provided to us, please do so. We will not share e-mail addresses for any purpose with anyone else. The contact information will be used solely to communicate about this project. We will always cc WIB Directors on YCI broadcast email to Youth Council members and staff. We have also included all WIB director e-mail addresses in the about-to-be-launched YCI list serve.
