Summer Youth Ecology Corps (SYEC)



Project Hosts for 2010
In 2010 160 youth will work with 17 project hosts totaling 44 projects to better Sonoma County.

County Agencies and Departments

Sonoma County Water Agency
Multiple Streams and Creeks throughout the county
Eight or more SYEC crews will conduct extensive stream maintenance, flood control, invasive species removal, and native plant resoration in Santa Rosa, North County, Sonoma Valley, and West County. Crews may also perform general maintenace at SCWA facilities.

Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District
Montini Open Space Preserve and Sonoma Mountain Ranch

SYEC crew members will remove invasive species in a 9 acre piece of the Montini Preserve and clear vegetation around structures, trim trees, move debris, and remove grass and soil from structures at Sonoma Mountain Ranch.

Sonoma County Regional Parks
Doran Beach and Bodega Bay Lodge Trail, Birdwalk, Spring Lake and Shilo Ranch Regional Parks, Maxwell Farms, Schopflin Fields and Unity Wetlands, Colgan Creek, Foothill Trail
SYEC Crews will help maintain an ecological restoration project by weeding and watering the plantings and removing iceplants at both Doran and Birdwalk Regional Parks, widen and level an existing trail from the Bodega Bay Lodge to Doran Park; remove invasive species, conduct stream maintenance and grafitti removal at Maxwell Farms; plant and remove invasive species in the Unity Wetlands; construct a puncheon (small bridge) connecting the Colgan Creek Trail to Bellvue Elementary School; maintain trails on the Oakwood Trail, Creekside Trail, and on hiking, equestrian, and fishing trails at Spring Lake Park; and correct erosion at the intersection of Foothill’s Pond B & Ravine trails.

Cities and City Departments

City of Cloverdale
City Park, Foothill Blvd, Riverfront and Furber Parks
SYEC crew members will rake leaves and loose tree shedding, pick up litter, and build and place cavity-nesting bird boxes in open spaces and wetland areas for nesting native bird species at City Park; enhance lighting and landscaping areas and provide ssistance to the Public Works Department to maintain native vegetation along Foothill Boulevard; and remove invasive vegetation along the riverwalk at Riverfront and Furber Parks.

City of Healdsburg
Badger Park, Healdsburg Community Center After School Garden, Foss Creek, Villa Chanticleer
SYEC crew members will prune and remove exotic plant material, build trails, manage vegetation and remove Aurundo Donax (River Cane) along the Badger Park trail; renovate the HCC After School garden including the installation of raised beds, plant maintenance and irrigation installation; remove invasive plants, provide erosion control and install new native riparian plant species to improve habitat at Foss Creek. and prune vegetation identified as fuel load and perform general cleanup duties throughout the forested area of Villa Chanticleer.

City of Petaluma
Friends of the River: River Heritage Center, and Shollenberger Park :Wetlands Vegetation Program
SYEC crew members will conduct general landscaping of grounds and maintain facilities to create a Nature Education Facility at McNear Landing and remove invasive weeds at Shollenberger Park; and plant native trees and other vegetation, build a small native garden, seed and propagate native species for planting in wetlands areas, construct redwood benches, and finish construction of a Native Plant Arboretum at Alman Marsh.

City of Petaluma and Petaluma City Schools
Native Plant Nursery
SYEC crew members will be engaged gardening activities and help cultivate native species.

City of Petaluma Water Department
Ellis Creek Water Recycling Facility, Hopper Street PIPS, Lynch Creek, Copeland & D Street
SYEC crew members will remove weeds, replant areas and spread mulch, plant trees, paint, and perform general maintenance on Water Department facilities and grounds.
Prince Park North / Prince Park South. Garfield, Maria Drive, Petaluma Airport
SYEC crew members will paint well houses and reclaim valving at Water Deparment locations around the city.

City of Santa Rosa Police Department
Mulitple Locations
SYEC crew members will remove graffiti at various locations around the city,

City of Santa Rosa Park Maintenance
Various Parks
SYEC crew members will conduct general grounds clean-up, weed, repair fences, clear ponds, and remove sand at various park facilities around the city, and build a trail at Howarth Park.

Non Profit Organizations

Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation
SYEC crew members will remove and restore hardware and irrigation material to create a pristine riparian habitat.

Patchwork Farms
Patchwork Outdoor Learning Laboratory
SYEC crew members will clear land, build a water pond, make adobe bricks, build a cob, and plant and weed organic gardens.

Petaluma Bounty
Sustainable Food & Learning Center
SYEC crew members will be engaged in plant propagation, soil preparation, transplanting, weeding, watering, and harvesting; lay irrigation, wash and prepare vegetables and flowers for sale or delivery, help maintain facilities, build and maintain compost piles, plan and lay out garden beds, help manage the farm stand, glean produce, and act as a docent for public visitors to farm sites.

Russian Riverkeeper
Riverkeeper Stewardship Park Project
SYEC crew members will remove exotic invasive plants such as Himalayan Blackberry, Periwinkle, English Ivy, and Bermuda grass; place redwood bark mulch in areas that are cleared to prepare for native plant installations; and build park trails.

Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods
Willow Creek, Armstrong Woods, Austin Creek, Salt Point State Park
SYEC crew members will build fences at Willow Creek, remove brush, trim branches, shrubs and small treeas along fire roads and hiking trails in Armstrong Woods and at Austin Creek and Salt Point State Park.

Surfrider Foundation
Native Plant Habitat Improvement
SYEC crew members will clean beaches, restore a trail, and clear brush.

Ya-Ka-Ama
Native Plant Habitat Improvement
SYEC crew members will maintain a native plant trail, collect and study native plants, help maintain a native plant nursery, and remove invasive plants.
